Obituary of Raymond C. McGirr

 

Raymond C. McGirr, 77 of Freehold Township died Saturday, August 27, at home. Mr. McGirr was born in Rumson and was a lifelong resident of Monmouth County. He was a graduate of Rumson High School Class of 1945. He was a World War II and Korean War Navy veteran. Mr. McGirr was a member of the United Fire Company 1, Neptune City, for 46 years. He served as chief in 1965. He was a charter member and former president of the Association of Exempt Fireman, Borough of Neptune City. He was also a member of the Fireman’s Relief Association, serving as secretary for 20 years. He was an active participant with the fire company’s bowling team for over 45 years. During the 1960s, Mr. McGirr served on and was the vice president of the Neptune City Board of Education. He was also a former coach and treasurer of the Shore Tri-Boro Little League. Mr. McGirr had owned and operated R.C McGirr Floor Coverings, Neptune City for the past 53 years. He was an avid traveler and loved to drive. Over the past 15 years, he and his companion Jeanne had the opportunity to visit all 50 states and all of North America. They often traveled on country roads and enjoyed visiting with old friends along the way. They also traveled to many countries throughout the world including China, Southeast Asia, Australia, and Europe. Pop-Pop enjoyed sporting events, attending over 20 Super Bowls and many championship auto racing events.

He was predeceased by his wife, Lois L. McGirr in 1988. Surviving are his sons, Robert C. McGirr of Freehold Township, and Donald R. McGirr and his wife, Ellen of Howell; his daughter and son-in-law. Lee Ann and Robert Olohan of Owings MD; his grandsons, Raymond Charles McGirr II and Ian Robert McGirr; his loving companion, Jeanne Pry of Neptune City; a brother, William V. McGirr of Sacramento, CA; and two sisters, Grace, and Peterson and her husband, Harold “Pete “Peterson of West Belmar, and Gloria Sharpe of Lakehurst.

Visiting will be from 2:00 to 4:00 PM and 7:00 to 9:00 PM Tuesday, August 30, 2005 at the Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home, 100 Elton-Adelphia Road. Freehold Township. Friends and relatives are invited to attend his 11:00 AM funeral service on Wednesday, August 31, 2005 at the funeral home with Rev. Thomas J. O’Connor officiating. Interment will follow in Monmouth Memorial Park, Tinton Falls.
