Obituary of Michael W. Lyon, Sr.

Michael W. Lyon, Sr., 63, of Howell passed away suddenly on Monday, October 2, 2017.  Mike was born in Newark, raised in Bloomfield and lived in Piscataway for 29 years before moving to Howell in 2013.  Prior to his retirement in 2012, he worked as a facility technician for Verizon in Plainfield.

An avid golfer, Mike played all over the country, in addition to Ireland, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Bermuda and Mexico, to name a few.  He also enjoyed bowling and watching the Mets, although they frustrated him terribly. As a zealous Green Bay Packers fan, Mike owned stock in their organization and traveled with his son to see them play numerous times. Mike was known as the mayor; everyone who knew him loved him, and he subsequently forgot their name!  The memories he made with his family and friends will bring them comfort and laughter.  Mike’s greatest passion was his three granddaughters, and he relished his role as “Popi”.

He was predeceased by his parents, Walter and Angelina Lyon; sister, Mary Ann Mansolillo; in-laws,  Neal and Grace Cairns; and his yellow lab, Bailey.  Mike is survived by his wife of 39 years, Nancy Lyon of Howell; daughter, Nicole Kragh and her husband, Jon of Farmingdale; son, Michael Lyon, Jr. and his wife, Leyna of Parlin; three granddaughters, Harper, Avery and Jillian; sister, Elaine Mooney and her husband, Thomas of Bloomfield; brothers-in-law, Donald Mansolillo of Bloomfield, Robert Cairns and his wife, Diana of Brick, and Steven Cairns and Filomena of Brick; nieces, Donna Mansolillo, Daria Mansolillo, Danielle Cairns and Ashley Cairns; and nephew, Brandon Cairns; numerous cousins and too many friends to count.

Visitation will be held at the Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home, 100 Elton-Adelphia Road (Route 524), Freehold Township on Friday, October 6, 2017 from 4:00 to 8:00 PM.  Relatives and friends are invited to gather at 8:45 AM at the funeral home on Saturday, October 7, 2017 for the procession to his 10:00 AM Funeral Mass at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, 31 Asbury Road, Farmingdale.  Interment will follow in St. Anne’s Cemetery, Wall.  For those who desire, donations in memory of Mike may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.  For information, directions or condolence messages to the family, visit www.claytonfuneralhome.com
