Obituary of Anthony Liano

Anthony was born in New York City on January 5, 1930.  He is the fifth of the nine children of Salvatore and Anna. 

After graduating high school Anthony joined the Navy at the time of the Korean war.  During his service, he traveled the world visiting places such as Cuba, Egypt, Greece and Italy. After his discharge he attended Adelphi University on the G.I. Bill, pursing his Masters in Education.  He then began his career as a teacher, culminating with his professorship in Business and Computer Science.

He married the love of his life, Patricia in 1960. They have three children, Gregory, Douglas and Mary.  They enjoyed a wonderful life in Commack, Long Island, then Mt. Sinai, Long Island, and finally, Freehold, New Jersey.

Anthony was a man of great curiosity and creativity.  In the 1970s he and Pat decided it would be adventurous to construct a log cabin from scratch in a remote part of the New York wilderness. The family spent many wonderful summers building and living in the cabin and swimming in the St. Regis River.  Anthony also was an avid gardener, painter and bargain-shopper.  At sixty years of age, despite a fear of heights, he took up flying.

Anthony’s great joy was serving as President of the Legion of Mary. He was responsible for the creation and distribution of over 175,000 rosaries. His faith was immense and he had many friends at the Infant Jesus Parish in Port Jefferson, Long Island. He also was a Pilgrim, traveling to Fatima, Guadalupe, Lourdes, and Medjugorje.

Anthony’s greatest pride and joy was his family. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and could always be counted on to provide the freshest Italian bread and the best desserts.

Anthony is survived by Patricia, his wife of 62 years. Anthony is also survived by his children Gregory and Brenda Liano of Howell, Douglas and Betsy Liano of Rochester and Mary and Sal  Zambri of Bethesda.  He is survived by eight grandchildren, Jennifer, Simone, Samantha, Sophia, Bethany, Alyssa, Ava and David.  He is also survived by his siblings Mary Lolis, Larry and Carmela Italiano, Fanny and Lou Gennari, Joseph Italiano and Diana Byrnes.  His surviving in-laws are Kitty and Mike Shukofsky , Rosemary and Jack Dotzler, Sue and Bill Schlageter, Josie Italiano, Tina Italiano,  and Joan Prendergast.  He is predeceased by his parents Salvatore and Anna Italiano, his siblings Jack Italiano, Sal Italiano, Frank and Belen Italiano and his brother-in-laws Peter Lolis and Larry Prendergast.

Visitation will be held at the Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home, 100 Elton-Adelphia Road (Route 524), Freehold Township on Wednesday, September 21, 2022 from 2:00 to 4:00 PM and 6:00 to 8:00 PM. Relatives and friends are invited to gather at 9:30 AM at the Funeral Home on Thursday, September 22, 2022 for the procession to his 10:30 AM Funeral Mass at the Co-Cathedral of St. Robert Bellarmine, 61 Georgia Road, Freehold Township. For those that cannot attend Mass in person, the family invites you to participate via Webcast, HERE. Interment will follow in Marlboro Memorial Cemetery and Mausoleum, 361 Hwy 79, Morganville.
