Michael Calicari

Obituary of Michael Anthony Calicari

Michael was a talented professional drummer, beginning his musical journey at the age of nine. By fourteen, he was already performing with his father’s band, launching a career that spanned over 50 years. Throughout his career, he played alongside renowned musicians such as Count Basie, Mike Santiago, Rio Clemente, Benny Goodman, and Roberta Flack, among many others. In addition to performing, Michael was a dedicated music teacher, mentoring students in drums, guitar, and vocals for over 45 years.  His band, the Dino Calicari Quartet, was a testament to his passion for music. Beyond his musical achievements, Michael also served our country in the U.S. Coast Guard.

Born on November 1, 1950, Michael lived in Manalapan, N.J.

While sharing yearbook photos may feel like a modest tribute, they often serve as a nice reminder of the connections we shared, especially for those we haven’t seen in years. My first memory of Michael was his impeccable sense of style, so it was no surprise to learn that he and Penny Jacobs were voted “Neatest” in our senior class.

May we all cherish the memories we shared with Michael.

Our deepest condolences to his friends and family during this difficult time.
