Bruce Goldberg

Obituary of Bruce Goldberg

Bruce Goldberg, 71, of Howell, passed away on Saturday, March 22, 2025.  Bruce’s life was one filled with passion, creativity, and devotion to those he loved.  Born in Vineland and raised in Howell, he carried his strong sense of optimism and determination throughout his life.  His love for the arts led him to New York City, where he pursued a career in acting, becoming a member of SAG-AFTRA and Actors’ Equity and gracing television, commercials, music videos, and particularly theater with his talent.  He brought stories to life through Plays in the Park, receiving critical acclaim and leaving an indelible mark on local theatergoers.

Beyond the stage, Bruce held numerous roles in both his professional and personal life. The consummate host and entertainer, he worked as a restaurant manager and event planner, later becoming the proud owner of the bookstore “Paperback Writers.”  His leadership and compassion for others extended to his faith as a church and council member of the Jerseyville United Methodist Church.  He also made a lasting impact on young athletes as a dedicated basketball and baseball coach, coaching several championship teams with North Howell Little League.

Bruce's zest for life encompassed a wide range of interests and hobbies.  A devoted fan of the New York Yankees and New York Giants, he never missed an opportunity to cheer on his teams, sharing his love of sports with family and friends.  A comic book, science fiction, and fantasy enthusiast, Bruce was particularly drawn to heroes, like Superman and Doctor Who, both of whom exemplified his values of selflessness and always doing what’s right. That’s why it was no surprise when Bruce won a Civilian Award from the local PBA in recognition of his life-saving efforts for another.

Yet, amidst all his roles and achievements, Bruce found his greatest joy in the simple moments of life. He nurtured his garden with care, particularly his peonies and daffodils, and often lost himself in the wonder of the sky, from tracking an eclipse to spreading the word about the next meteor shower, encouraging others to “keep looking up.”  But nothing compared to the role he cherished most—being “Grandpa.”  Whether babysitting or simply spending time with his granddaughters, Bruce embraced every moment with love and laughter, leaving them with treasured memories that will last a lifetime. His granddaughters will always remember playing pretend with their very own “Peter Pan” and Grandpa’s love of Reese’s.

Bruce’s legacy is one of exuberance, warmth, and dedication. He touched countless lives through his artistry, mentorship, and unwavering love for his family. On stage and in the hearts of those who knew and loved him, his story will live on, like so many of the heroes he admired.

Bruce is survived by his wife of forty years, Joanne; two children, Dara Murray and her husband, Andy, of Baltimore, and Thomas Goldberg, his wife, Kate, and two granddaughters, Riley and Thea, of Brielle; and his brother, Drew Goldberg, of Toms River.
