Obituary of Matthew J. Kennedy, Jr.
Matthew J. Kennedy, Jr., 67, of Freehold passed away peacefully with his family by his side on January 4, 2026. He was born and had lived in Brooklyn until moving to Freehold in 1992. Matthew was a project manager for Verizon for 26 years, where he dedicated himself to his work. His greatest accomplishments were his family, whom he cherished above all else. He was a devoted husband, father, grandpa and brother and his love for them knew no bounds. Matthew was a friend that all could rely on, always there to lend a listening ear or a helping hand. He enjoyed watching horse racing at Monmouth Park and Saratoga, where he found joy and excitement in the thrill of the races, his knowledge of the tracks and horses was impressive to all who knew him. Matthew enjoyed listening to music, with a special love for the Allman Brothers and the Rolling Stones. He was a huge music fan and could often be singing along to his favorite tunes.
Matthew was predeceased by his parents, Lorraine and Matthew Kennedy; and brother, Mark Kennedy. He is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen Kennedy; two children, Matthew Kennedy and his wife, Alexis of New Egypt and Arlene Kennedy of Freehold; two grandchildren, Brielle and Matthew; sister, Nancy Demetro of Monroe; and many nieces, nephews and extended family members.
Visitation will be held at the Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home, 100 Elton-Adelphia Road (Route 524), Freehold Township on Thursday, January 8, 2026 from 3:00 to 7:00 PM. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his 10:30 AM Funeral Mass at the Co-Cathedral of St. Robert Bellarmine, 61 Georgia Road, Freehold Township on Friday, January 9, 2026. Interment to follow at Marlboro Memorial Cemetery, 361 Highway 79, Morganville, NJ 07751. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Matthew’s name may be made to American Cancer Society.
