It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Gordon Dennis Wells, who left us peacefully on January 11, 2026, at the age of 82. Born on November 4, 1943, in Philadelphia, Gordon was a beacon of strength and kindness throughout his life, exemplifying what it means to be a loving husband, devoted father, and cherished friend.
Gordon was the youngest son of Claude and Catharine Wells and grew up in a close-knit family. He was preceded in death by his beloved brothers Paul Arthur, Carl, Robert, and Wayne, whose spirits will surely welcome him. He is survived by his loving wife, Lynn, with whom he shared a beautiful marriage for over 58 years, having wed on September 9, 1967, at Freehold Reformed Church. Together, they built a life rich with love and laughter.
Gordon was a loving father to his three children: Gordon (Kayo) Wells Jr., Melissa (Matthew) Denton, and Gillian (Christian) Vitanza. His love extended to his five treasured grandchildren: Kate, Jackson, Blake, Kora, and Avery, who brought him immeasurable joy and pride. He is also survived by his brother, Claude "Sonny," and numerous nieces and nephews who remain with us to honor Gordon's memory.
Gordon attended Freehold High School, Class of 1962, then served his country honorably as a Corporal in the Marine Corps from 1962 to 1965. His dedication during this pivotal time in his life laid the foundation for the values he would carry with him forever: integrity, resilience, and a steadfast commitment to his loved ones.
Following his service, Gordon embarked on a diverse career. He was employed as a hydraulic mechanic for Bendix Field Engineering, contracted to NASA, in Madagascar from 1968 to 1970 before returning to the United States. He maintained helicopters in Philadelphia with Boeing from 1971 to 1973, and devoted thirty years to Six Flags Great Adventure as a millwright, where he worked tirelessly until his retirement in 2003. His work ethic and dedication were admired by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Gordon was more than just his accomplishments; he was a unique soul who brought joy to those around him. He had an infectious smile and a warm spirit that could brighten even the darkest days. Gordon's charm was perhaps best exemplified in his kitchen, where he delighted family and friends with his incredible pizza and delicious chocolate chip cookies. He always had a way of reminding us to "take it easy," a mantra that resonated deeply with those who loved him.
Post-retirement, Gordon and Lynn traveled the world together, taking many cruises and making new friends along the way; and visiting their adult children wherever they happened to be: Japan, the United Kingdom, and Hawaii. Gordon continued living life to the fullest despite medical setbacks in 2013 that would limit his mobility, but not his desire to explore.
Although he has left this world, Gordon's spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew him. His legacy of love, laughter, and kindness will never be forgotten.
As we mourn the loss of Gordon Dennis Wells, let us remember the laughter he brought, the lessons he taught, and the love he shared. He will be deeply missed, but his memory will forever be a source of comfort and inspiration to all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Rest in peace, Gordon. You have completed your journey and left behind a legacy of love that will continue to thrive in the hearts of your family and friends.
