Annette Eve Schaefer, 81, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, scientist, and educator, passed away peacefully at Applewood Village in Freehold, New Jersey. She married George Schaefer in 1966, and they raised their two daughters in Brooklyn, before moving to Staten Island in 2001 and then to Freehold in 2008. Born on Christmas Eve in 1944 in Brooklyn, New York, Annette grew up with a passion for learning that guided her life's work. She earned her Ph.D. in Biology from the City University of New York and dedicated her career to cancer research working at Cornell Medical Center and NYU Medical Center. Later, she transitioned to academia, serving as a professor and ultimately as Dean of Arts and Sciences at the New York City College of Technology, where she retired in 2004 after a distinguished career.
Annette truly enjoyed sharing her knowledge with others, always offering to assist her daughters' friends and other family members when she could with their science studies. She loved British television mysteries and trips to Atlantic City with her friends and family. She also enjoyed knitting and her grandchildren were never without hats or scarves made by Grandma.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George Schaefer, in 2019. She is survived by her two daughters, Jennifer Faas of Freehold, NJ and Erika Schaefer of Atlantic Highlands, NJ; her six cherished grandchildren, Madeline, Christopher, Lucas, Violet, George, and Annette; her sister, Gloria Black of Ringgold, GA, as well as her nieces and nephews.
All arrangements were private by Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home, Freehold Township. For those who desire, donations may be made in Annette's name to the Monmouth Museum, PO Box 359, Lincroft, New Jersey 07738 or HERE, where a microscope station is being planned in her honor.
