Obituary of Janet Whelton

Janet Whelton, 71, of Monroe passed away on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, at her residence.  She was born and raised in Brooklyn and had lived in Manalapan before settling in Monroe. Janet was a remarkable person and a gift to us all. She dedicated over 20 years of her professional life as a sales associate at Best Tile, where she was a well-respected member of the team. Outside of work, she was known for her exceptional cooking, most notably her meatballs, shrimp scampi, and eggplant. She was also a true "shopping queen" who had mastered the art of the return and found great joy in her love for sewing. Most importantly, nothing meant more to Janet than her grandchildren; she cherished every moment spent with them.

Janet is predeceased by her first husband, Charles Avella, Sr. and her son, Michael William Avella. She is survived by her husband, William Whelton of Monroe; four children, Charles Avella and his wife, Amanda of Freehold, Danielle Anastasio and her husband, Anthony of Freehold, Jillian Schmidtt of Southbury, Connecticut and Jessica Hoffman and her husband, Evan of Holly Springs, North Carolina; seven grandchildren, Anthony and his wife, Kayla, Michael, Rocco, Franco, Angelo, Brayden and James; two siblings, Joanne Shanahan and her husband, Bill of Manalapan and Joseph Carretta of Staten Island; former sister-in-law, Robin Carretta; nieces; Melissa, Joanne, Lauren, and Nicole; and nephews, Dennis, Richie, Louie, Gabe and Joseph.

A gathering of friends will be held at the Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home, 100 Elton-Adelphia Road (Route 524), Freehold Township on Saturday, June 20, 2026 from 12:00 to 3:30 PM with her funeral service to follow.
