Obituary of Charles S. Buscaglia

It is with heavy hearts and profound respect that we announce the passing of Charles Sparks Buscaglia, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and community pillar, who peacefully departed this world on June 30, 2026, at the age of 89, surrounded by the warmth of his loving family at his home.

Born on November 17, 1936, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Charlie was the cherished son of Ann and Guy Buscaglia. From an early age, his life was a testament to the values of dedication, kindness, and service to others—a legacy he carried forward in every aspect of his remarkable journey.

Charlie began his educational journey at Freehold High School, graduating in 1954. He continued his studies at Penn State University, where he majored in engineering before embarking on a successful career in banking. His professional journey started as a bank teller at the First National Bank of Freehold in 1957, and his tireless work ethic saw him rise to the position of Vice President at Fidelity Union. Even after retirement, Charlie continued to share his expertise in collections with Freehold Cartage Inc.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Charlie was a dedicated member of the community. For 75 years, he was an active participant in the First Baptist Church of Freehold, serving as a life trustee and financial officer. His commitment to service extended to the Freehold First Aid & Emergency Squad, where he volunteered for over 67 years in various roles, including Captain, Treasurer, and Trustee. As the eldest member of the Freehold Rotary Club, Charlie's exceptional service was recognized with the prestigious Paul Harris Fellow Award. Charlie participated as a member of the Freehold Independent Fire Company #1 before serving on the Board of Fire Commissioners for 35 years. A member of Shriner's International, the Olive Branch Masonic Lodge #16 F&AM, Freehold Area Open Door and a past patron of the Molly Pitcher branch of the Order of the Eastern Star. Charlie served as a Supervisor for the Freehold Soil Conservation District and was a longtime member of Monmouth County Board of Agriculture. Charlie loved to serve his community.

His life was rich with interests and hobbies that began with the Boy Scouts of America and reflected his love for family and adventure. Whether it was camping, embarking on travel adventures, enjoying the thrill of a NASCAR race, or the patience of deer hunting, his zest for life was contagious. Known for his quick wit and warm smile, Charlie had the unique ability to make everyone feel welcome and valued, leaving an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Charlie is survived by his devoted wife of 66 years, Arlene Kathryn Madge, with whom he created a life filled with love and happiness since their marriage on April 23, 1960, in Adelphia. Together, they raised a family that was his pride and joy—his surviving children: Robert (Valerie), Jean Buscaglia-Yurkiewicz (Barry), Jane Cheung, Brian Buscaglia, Ruth Ann Buscaglia, and Eva-Lena Olofsson (Claus). He also leaves behind a devoted daughter-in-law, Caycee Buscaglia, and cherished grandchildren: Kerri Buscaglia (Marina), William Buscaglia, Jenna Ferguson (Mike), Vendela Norrman, Caroline Edwards (Justin), Ryan Buscaglia, Vincent Norrman, and Michalia Cheung. His legacy further extends to his four precious great-grandchildren: Cassidy Buscaglia-McMahon, Rivkah Cheung, and Zivah and Caleb Ferguson, as well as a large extended family who will always remember him fondly.

Charlie was predeceased by his parents and son, Bruce Edward Buscaglia, who remains in the hearts of all who loved him.

The Buscaglia family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate professionals of Embracing Hospice, Melissa Collins RN, Dieuna Horning CNA, Justin Warner Chaplain and Charlie's caregiver, Dominique Zadok, for their care and support during his final days.

Charlie Buscaglia's life was a beacon of love, service, and kindness—a legacy that will continue to inspire and guide those he leaves behind. His spirit will forever remain in the hearts of those who had the honor of knowing and loving him.

Visitation will be held at the Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home, 100 Elton-Adelphia Road (Route 524), Freehold Township on Friday, July 10, 2026 from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 PM.  Relatives and friends are invited to attend his 10:00 AM funeral service on Saturday, July 11, 2026 at the First Baptist Church of Freehold, 79 West Main Street. For those who cannot attend in person, the family invites you to participate via Webcast, HERE. Interment will follow in Maplewood Cemetery & Mausoleum, 169 West Main Street, Freehold Township.
