Obituary of Gary A. Getz
Gary A. Getz, 71, of Howell, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Monday, August 3, 2026, at Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune. Born in Plainfield, Gary was raised in Dunellen, lived in East Brunswick as an adult, and eventually settled in Howell in the early 2000s, where he made his home for the years that followed.
Gary proudly served his country in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. Following his military service, he built a successful career that included serving as manager of the Law Coffee Co. in Newark and later as a Quality Control Supervisor for Lennar in Monroe.
Gary was a memorable man who left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him. He was known for his warm personality, sense of humor, and ability to make people laugh. Gary was genuinely liked and respected by the many friends, coworkers, and family members whose lives he touched.
Gary enjoyed life’s simple pleasures and made many lasting memories with those he loved. He enjoyed cruising to the Bahamas and throughout the Caribbean, date-night trips to Atlantic City with his wife, spending time on the golf course, and both saltwater and freshwater fishing. A lifelong sports fan, Gary was a die-hard supporter of the New York Giants.
Most of all, Gary was a devoted husband, loving father, and adoring Pop. He shared 51 wonderful years of marriage with Barbara, his beloved wife and best friend. He cherished his daughters, grandchildren, and the special moments they shared together. As a Pop, Gary brought laughter, love, and joy to his family and treasured the closeness they shared.
He was predeceased by his beloved daughter, Jessica Danielle Purcell, in 2025, and his parents, Albert and Carol Getz.
Gary is survived by his wife of 51 years, Barbara (nee Plaskon) Getz; daughters, Melissa “Missy” Thomas and her husband, Michael, and Deanna Getz and her husband, Rob; grandchildren, Morgan, Nicole, Madison, and Macie; sister, Cathy DeMartino and her husband, Jim; and brother, Andrew Getz.
A memorial gathering will be held at Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home, 100 Elton-Adelphia Road (Route 524), Freehold Township, on Thursday, August 13, 2026, from 3:00 to 6:30 PM, with his memorial service to follow.
