Matthew Oxford

Obituary of Matthew L. Oxford

Matthew L. Oxford, 90, of Howell passed away surrounded by his family on Saturday, January 27, 2024.  He was born and raised in Wrightsville, GA, and had lived in North Bergen and Roselle Park before settling here in 1963. Matthew was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend to all who knew him.

Matthew's life was marked by his commitment to service. During the Korean War, he served in the United States Navy.  He continued his dedication to others as a parishioner of the Church of St. Veronica, where he served as a Eucharistic Minister. For five decades, Matthew was a proud member of the American Legion Post 54 in Freehold. He owned his own painting business, Oxford Painting.  Through his workmanship and attention to detail, Matthew left a lasting mark on homes and businesses in the area.  He was an avid bowler and spent years in many leagues at Howell Lanes.

While Matthew enjoyed professional accomplishments, his greatest joy in life came from being a grandfather. He cherished every moment spent with his grandchildren, showering them with love, wisdom, and guidance.

Matthew is survived by his wife of 65 years, Ethel Oxford; sons, Darren Oxford and his wife, Sandra of Mt. Juliet, TN and Eric Oxford and his wife, Joan of Howell; daughter, Julie Whelan and her husband, David C. of Howell; grandchildren, David M. Whelan of Howell, Kyle Oxford of Murfreesboro, TN and Derek Oxford and his wife, Rachel of Murfreesboro, TN; and two great grandchildren, Luke and Lennon.

All arrangements were private and under the direction of the Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home, Freehold Township.  In memory of Matthew, donations to the Church of St. Veronica would be appreciated at 4215 Route 9 North, Howell 07731.  To leave condolence messages to the family, visit www.claytonfuneralhome.com
