Obituary of Garland Grammer Jr.

Garland Grammer, Jr., PhD, 75, of Jackson passed away on Wednesday, January 30, 2019 at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township.  He was born in Lynchburg, Virginia, and was raised in Roanoke, Virginia.  Garland proudly served in the United States Army where he was stationed in South Korea during the Vietnam War.  He began his career as a research associate at Cornell University, where he eventually received his Doctorate in Theoretical Elementary Particle Physics.  Garland also received his Bachelor’s degree from Virginia Tech.  He worked as a research associate at the Institute for Theoretical Physics at SUNY Stony Brook and as a research assistant professor at the University of Illinois.  Garland retired from Bell Labs/AT&T, Holmdel in 2000 and from IBM, Middletown in 2015 as a senior project executive.  In the 1970s, he worked with Dr. Martin Perl at Stanford University. This work later contributed to the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1995 for the discovery of the tau lepton. Garland’s work took him around the world, but he returned to his greatest love of teaching physics at Monmouth University. He enjoyed basketball, playing the piano, and going fishing.  Garland was a humble man, dedicated husband, and loving father and grandfather.

Garland was predeceased by his parents, Garland Grammer, Sr., and Ethel Grammer.  He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Cathy Grammer of Jackson; children, Alex Grammer and her husband, Stewart Rowles of Gaithersburg, MD, Dr. Geoffrey Grammer, and his wife, Mary El of Rockville, MD, Joe Grammer and his wife, Anna of Alexandria, VA, Jim Grammer of Queens, and Christa Grammer of Jackson; grandchildren, Josh, Dan, and Riley; sister, Suzanne Bond of Richmond, VA; and brother, David Grammer and his wife, Joanne of Far Hills, NJ.

A visitation will be held at the Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home, 100 Elton-Adelphia Road (Route 524), Freehold Township on Monday, February 4, 2019 from 4:00 to 8:00 PM.  Relatives and friends are invited to attend his 10:00 AM Funeral Mass on Tuesday, February 5, 2019 at the Co-Cathedral of St. Robert Bellarmine, 61 Georgia Road, Freehold Township.
