Obituary of Herbert Layton

Herbert M. "Hug or Huggy" Layton, 71, of Jackson passed away on Wednesday, April 22, 2015 at The Manor, Freehold Township. Herbert was born in Neptune and lived most of his life in Colts Neck and Freehold before moving to Jackson 5 years ago. He worked full time for Brock Farms, Freehold, and then a truck driver and motor broom operator for Freehold Township Road Department for over 31 years. While working for Freehold Township Road Department, Herbert stopped a robbery in progress. He was a firm believer in unionized labor belonging to the C.W.A. Local 1034, West Trenton. Herbert will be remembered as a kind, respected, hard worker. He was a loving husband, father and most of all a wonderful grandfather named Poppy. Herbert is survived by his wife of 50 years, Anne Castronova Layton of Jackson; two children, Katherine Malko of Howell and Joseph Layton and his wife Dina of Colts Neck; seven grandchildren, Eric, Jr., Lacee, Annie, Rebecca, Theresa, Joseph and Rosemarie; and two sisters, Nancy Pease and her husband, Frank of Toms River and Ann Potter of Florida. His nephew and niece, Mike and Mary Sweet of Freehold held a special place in his heart. The Castronova and DeLucia families were also a huge part of his life. A receiving of friends will be held at the Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home, 100 Elton-Adelphia Road, Freehold Township on Saturday, May 2, 2015 from 11:00 to 2:00 PM. Cremation was private.
