Obituary of Michael Caprio
Michael L. Caprio, 83, passed away on Tuesday, March 13, 2012 at CareOne at Holmdel, shortly after being diagnosed with Metastatic Melanoma of the Pancreas. Michael was born on June 3, 1928 and raised in Elizabeth before moving to Old Bridge in 1984 and finally settling in Spotswood in 1995. He attended St. Mary's Grammar School (Elizabeth) and St. Benedict's Prep. School (Newark). He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II stationed in Tientsen, China and at the St. Albans Military Hospital in Queens, NY.
After discharge, Michael worked with his father at "Caprio's Mens Shop" in Elizabeth until 1964. During that time period, he also served as the Commissioner of the Parking Authority of the City of Elizabeth. After that, Michael pursued a career as a liquor salesman and then was employed by the NJ Sports and Exhibition Authority at the Meadowlands until his retirement.
Michael was a member of the John Basilone Marine Corps League, Detachment 190, Milltown. He was also a Life Member of The Marine Corps League, the Marine Corps Association, the China Marine Association, the 1st Marine Division Association, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Disabled American Veterans.
He was a retired member of the Wine & Liquor Salesman's Union - Local # 19 (now merged with Local 2-D) and the Sports Arena Employees Local # 137.
Although Michael never spoke much about his fraternal affiliations, there is evidence in his memoirs of being a member of the Benevolent & Protective Order of Elks (Elizabeth) and the Knights of Columbus.
Michael was predeceased by his parents, Michael and Adalina; his five sisters, Lannie Guarriello, Grace Sabia, Lee Gallo, Elizabeth Pizza and Vera Merlo; and his wife, Marion. He is survived by his son, Michael L. Caprio, Jr. and his wife, Mary of Howell Twp. and a granddaughter, Jennifer Capstick and her husband, Thomas of New York City, NY.
Relatives and friends may gather at the Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home, 100 Elton-Adelphia Road (Route 524), Freehold Township on Sunday, April 29, 2012 from 1:00 to 3:30 PM with a service by the John Basilone Marine Corps League, Detachment 190 at 2:00 PM. Inurnment will be private.
