He attended Kings Point Merchant Marine Academy to become an officer during World War II, proudly serving all over the world. He retired as a Director for the Department of Labor, State of New Jersey overseeing the Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspection and Examination. He tinkered with clocks, at one time building one, and was a Civil War and Revolutionary War buff. An easy going and personable man, he loved to travel to Ireland to visit his family. Charlie was predeceased by his first wife, Mary Meade in 2010 and his second wife, Betty Hanlon in 2001. He is survived by four daughters, Janet McNerney and her husband, Michael, of Carmel, Maine, Laura Hanlon and her husband, Dave Weinstein, of Hillsborough, Elaine Meade and her husband, Christopher, of Kenilworth, and Linda Kreie and her husband, Rick, of Caldwell; one son, Brian Hanlon and his fiancée, Washington Atiencia, of South Orange; two stepsons, Jim Graf and his wife, Sue, of Franklin Square, Long Island, and William Graf and his wife, Linda, of Westfield; six grandchildren and one great grandchild. Visitation will be held at the Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home, 100 Elton-Adelphia Road (Route 524), Freehold Township on Monday, November 23, 2015 from 4:00 to 8:00 PM. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his 9:00 AM funeral service at the funeral home on Tuesday, November 24, 2015. Interment is private.
