Obituary of George Cox
George James Cox, Jr., 90, of Howell Township passed away at home on Wednesday, December 23, 2015. George was born and raised in Jersey City and lived in Houston, Texas before moving to Howell Township in 1984. He received his master's degree from Columbia University. George was an accountant for Exxon Bayway Refinery, Elizabeth for over 40 years retiring in 1983. He was a veteran of the United States Navy serving in World War II. George was a parishioner and an usher at the Church of St. Veronica's, Howell. He was the founder and president of the USS Yukon Association. George was an avid golfer and a proud hole in one member.
George was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy Betty Cox in December 2014. He is survived by two sons, George J. Cox, III and his wife, Ellen of Hillsborough and Robert Cox and his wife, Patricia of Delran; two daughters, Karen Backman and her husband, John of New Hartford, NY and Marigrace Meyer and her husband, Jeffrey of Howell; eight grandchildren, John C. Backman, II, Tara Nielsen and her husband, Keith, George J. Cox, IV and his partner, Michele Terroni, Thomas R. Cox, Christopher R. Cox and his partner, Danielle McGrath, Eileen Cox, Grace Meyer and Emily Meyer; two great grandchildren, Caroline Nielsen and George J. Cox, V; and his twin brother, Harold T. Cox of Clark.
Visitation will be held at the Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home, 100 Elton-Adelphia Road (Route 524), Freehold Township on Tuesday, December 29, 2015 from 4:00 to 8:00 PM. Relatives and friends may gather at the funeral home on Wednesday, December 30, 2015 at 9:00 AM for the procession to St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church, 61 Georgia Road, Freehold Township for his 10:00 AM Funeral Mass.
