Obituary of Walter McDermott
Walter J. McDermott, 92, of Freehold Township, passed away surrounded by his family at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune Township. Born and raised in Orange, he moved to Livingston with his wife to raise their family. After his retirement, he settled in Freehold in 2000. Walter served honorably in the United States Navy during World War II. He provided 45 years of dedicated service as an auditor for The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company. Walter was an avid Yankee and Giant's fan, attending several Super Bowls. He coached little league for his sons, and was devoted to his grandchildren and their activities. Walter never missed a party. He enjoyed spending holidays with his family and could always be found with an Irish coffee in his hand.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Grace Dorothy McDermott; and son in law, Mark O. Smith. Walter is survived by his three children, Linda Smith of Lawrence Township, Richard McDermott and his wife, Anna of Jackson, and Michael McDermott and his wife, Kathleen of Bernardsville; three grandchildren, Kylie Bryn Smith, Megan Kathryn McDermott, and Christopher Walter McDermott.
A visitation will be held at the Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home, 100 Elton-Adelphia Road (Route 524), Freehold Township on Tuesday, November 22, 2016 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. Relatives and friends are invited to gather at the funeral home on Wednesday, November 23, 2016 at 9:00 AM for the procession to his 10:00 AM Funeral Mass at St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church, 61 Georgia Road, Freehold Township. Interment will follow in Gates of Heaven Cemetery, East Hanover.
