Obituary of David DeSio

David DeSio, 87, of Howell passed away at The Gardens at Monroe Rehabilitation, Monroe on Monday, April 24, 2017. He was born in Newark, moved to South Beach, Staten Island at the age of 2, and settled in Howell in 2001. After graduation from McKee Vocational & Technical High School, he entered the printing field working at the Williams Press, Richmond Boro Printing and Bayonne Printing in NJ. David met his wife at Jaegers Bungalow, and they were wed in 1954. In 1951, he entered the U.S. Army and served in Korea with the 62nd Engineer Construction Battalion until 1953. Among other construction projects, the bridge over Imjin River was his most memorable accomplishment. He enjoyed birds, and on many occasions, he and his wife nursed injured and abandoned birds to health. On one occasion, with the help of Park Police at Great Kills Park, he removed a large hook from the bill of a seagull who was unable to eat and was starving. His family, with five grandchildren, were his top priority. David enjoyed watching Yankee baseball, boxing, football and golf, among other sports. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy DeSio in 1999; his daughter, Denise DeSio Sokolovski in 2016; and 9 brothers and sisters. David is survived by his daughter, Debbie DelMonico and and her husband, Chris of Howell; son, David DeSio and his wife, Jean of Piscataway; son-in-law, Aco Sokolovski of Manalapan; five grandchildren, Dana Speziali, Christine DelMonico, Jessica DelMonico, Daniel DeSio and Nicholas Sokolovski; two great grandchildren, Jonathan Speziali and Darren Speziali; one sister, Rose Savoca of Staten Island; and many loving nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held at the Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home, 100 Elton-Adelphia Road (Route 524), Freehold Township on Wednesday, April 26, 2017 from 4:00 to 8:00 PM. Relatives and friends are invited to gather at 9:30 AM on Thursday, April 27, 2017 for the procession to his 10:30 AM Funeral Mass at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, Asbury Avenue, Farmingdale.
