Obituary of Hedda Barkalow

Hedda Marie Barkalow, 87, of Freehold Township, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 13, 2009 at home. Mrs. Barkalow was born in Hamburg, Germany, came to the United States in 1926 and had lived in Howell before settling to Freehold Township 20 years ago. Prior to her retirement, she worked for Howell Township as a tax collector for over 25 years and she also ran a nursery on Georgia Road. Mrs. Barkalow was a former president of the Monmouth and Ocean County Tax Collectors Association, and a member of the Farmingdale Grange. She was predeceased by her husband, E. Franklin Barkalow; a son, William J. Barkalow and a brother, Rudolph Barg. Mrs. Barkalow is survived by four sons, Frank and his wife Diane Barkalow of Howell, Robert and his wife Sue Barkalow of Farmingdale, Randolph Barkalow of Freehold Township and Douglas Barkalow of Freehold Township; two daughters, Hedda M. "Cookie" and her husband Bernhard Volkmann of Howell, and Dolores "Lori" Landfear of Howell; 15 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren. Visiting at the Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home, 100 Elton-Adelphia Road (Route 524) Freehold Township, NJ on Monday August 17, 2009 from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 PM. Relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral service at the funeral home on Tuesday, August 18, 2009 at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow in Adelphia Cemetery.
