Obituary of George Maury

George W. Maury, Jr., 78 years old, passed away October 24, 2009 at home. Mr. Maury was born in Oaks Bluffs, Martha's Vineyard, Mass. to the late George W. Maury Sr. and Henrietta Osborn Maury in 1931. He Graduated from Tisbury High School in 1950. Mr. Maury entered the United States Marine Corp. April 1951, served in the Korean War and was honorably discharged in 1954. George moved to New Jersey in 1956 and worked for New Jersey Bell Telephone Company for 32 years, retiring in 1988. He was a member of the Navesink Sportsmen Club, he loved to hunt and fish, just ask anyone that knew him. Mr. Maury was involved with the Boy Scouts of America and selflessly mentored scores of scouts in camping, woodlore and mountaineering. In 1988 he entered the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Oak Bluffs then transferred to Freehold in 2000 and became a life member and he was a member of the American Legion Post 54, Freehold, NJ. He is also a member of the Corporal Philip A. Reyonlds Marine Detachment 203, Freehold, NJ. Mr. Maury also served as Commandant in 2000 and was named 2009 Detachment Marine of the Year. He was also a member of the Military Order of the Devil Dog of which he was the Paymaster. He is predeceased by his parents, his infant children, Wayne and Eric, his first wife Patricia Lundrigan Maury and his brother-in-laws Donald Kornek and Daniel Kinkelaar. Surviving him are his wife Jane McGackin Maury, his sons Mark Maury of Freehold, Colin Maury of Chester, NY, his sisters Lorraine Kornek of Naples, FL and Martha's Vineyard, Marlene Kinkelaar of Mission Viejo, CA and Sandra Wells and husband Jim of Venice, FL. Jane's children Terry McGackin and wife Barbara, John McGackin, Christa Dailey and her husband Kevin. His 10 grandchildren, Rachael Ann Maury, Kayla, Brian, Anjanette, Jacklyn, Elizabeth, John Brice, Keely McGackin, Michael and Amanda Dailey, numerous nieces and nephews. George touched so many lives with his kindness, love and sincerity. He was a proud Pop-Pop to his 10 grandchildren, supporting father to his sons and daughter, loving brother to his sisters, caring uncle to his nieces and nephews and devoted husband to his wife. Most of all his was very proud to be a United States Marine. Semper Fidelis. Visiting at the Clayton & McGirr funeral home, 100 Elton-Adelphia Road (Route 524) Freehold Township, on Tuesday, October 27, 2009 from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 PM. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral service at the funeral home on Wednesday, October 28, 2009 at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery, Vineyard Have, MA.
