Obituary of Edgar Hargis
Edgar M. Hargis, 93, of Howell Twp. passed away on Tuesday, November 17, 2009 at his home. Mr. Hargis was born in Camden and had lived in Flemington before moving to Howell Twp. in 1957. He was the former Director of Adult Education for Monmouth County from 1970 to 1978. Prior to that, he served as Superintendent of Schools for Howell Township from 1957 to 1970 and he was a former principal of the Ardena School.
Mr. Hargis was a U.S. Army Air Corps. Veteran serving during World War II where he was a pilot/instructor. He was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church, Freehold, where he served as an Elder and a member of the Property Commission. Mr. Hargis was a member of Olive Branch F&AM, Freehold, for over 50 years. His hobby was clocks and was known as "The Clock Doctor." He was the Central Jersey representative for Seth Thomas Clock Co. for many years.
Mr. Hargis was the last surviving child of eight siblings. He is survived by his dearest wife of 64 years, Eleanor, of Howell Twp.; a daughter, Laverne Hill of Concord Twp., Ohio; and two granddaughters Tiffany Hill and her husband, Derek Haas, of Salem, Mass. and Morgan Mason and her husband, David, of Granville, Ohio; and a former Son-In-Law, David Hill.
Visiting at the Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home, 100 Elton-Adelphia Road (Route 524) Freehold Township, on Friday, November 20, 2009 from 7:00 to 9:00 PM. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral service at the First Presbyterian Church, 118 West Main Street, Freehold, NJ 07728 on Saturday, November 21, 2009 at 10:00 AM with Rev. Cynthia Bowman officiating. Interment will follow in Old Tennent Cemetery, Manalapan Twp. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Edgar's name may be made to the First Presbyterian Church Building Fund.
