Obituary of John Strevens
John "Jack" Strevens, Sr., 82, of Toms River, left this world on the path to glory on Tuesday, May 31, 2011. Born and raised in Cardiff, Wales, U.K. He was one of 13 children born to Stratford and Phyllis Strevens. He served in the British airborne as a paratrooper for 11 years . He moved to New York city in 1960 but would return home to Wales many times through out his life. He moved to New Jersey in 1962 where he resided for the rest of his life. He was a union carpenter working out of the Ocean County hall for 35 years before retiring in 1997. Always a fan of the performing arts, he was most impressed with the works of The Marx Brothers and Harold Loyd and studied them very closely. Jack was also a Beer enthusiast who often wrote short stories on the history of drinking beer, and eventually helped his son John Jr. build and open his bar "Pappy's Place" named for John Sr.
A devoted husband, Father, Grandfather, and friend, he was loved by all who knew him and will always be remembered for his kindness and amazing sense of humor. He will truly be missed. He was predeceased by his wife of 45 years, Ena Strevens. He is survived by two sons, John and his wife Heather, and David and his wife Kate; and three daughters, Karen Thomas and her husband Robert, Pamela Golden and her fiancé Mark Tilsner, and Brenda Strevens and her boyfriend Jerry Scardaville; and 13 grandchildren.
Visiting at the Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home, 100 Elton-Adelphia Road (Route 524), Freehold Township, on Sunday, June 5, 2011, from 12:00 Noon to 2:45 PM with his funeral service at 2:45 PM. Interment will be at St. Mary of the Lake Cemetery, Lakewood, NJ on Monday, June 6, 2011 at 11:00 AM.
