Obituary of Americus John D'Onofrio
Americus John D’Onofrio, 85, passed away at home surrounded by his family on Saturday, September 16, 2017. John was born and raised in Brooklyn. Along with his wife, John moved to Howell Township in the 1950’s, eventually settling in the Surrey Downs community in 2000. He was a United States Air Force veteran during the Korean War. John worked as a carpenter for the New York City Transit Authority for 25 years until his retirement. Following retirement, he went on to work at Fort Monmouth as a carpenter foreman/inspector for 11 years, and then worked at Rahway State Prison as a group instructor for 4 years. John was a former member of the Boy Scouts, Knights of Columbus, and V.F.W Post 96. He also was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 20 and the Monmouth County Office of Aging Advisory Council. John served on the board of the Howell Senior Friendship Club and as a delegate for the Howell Senior Center.
John was predeceased by his brother, Robert D’Onofrio. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Christine D’Onofrio; children, Michael D’Onofrio of Manasquan, Christopher D’Onofrio and his wife, Susan of Freehold, David D’Onofrio and his wife, Rhonda of Clarksboro, Susan D’Onofrio of Freehold, Tina Cofka and her husband, Mark of Manasquan, and Lisa D’Onofrio of Pennington; and two grandchildren, Izabella and Vaughn D’Onofrio.
A visitation will be held at the Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home, 100 Elton-Adelphia Road (Route 524), Freehold Township on Wednesday, September 20, 2017 from 4:00 to 7:00 PM. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his 11:00 AM funeral service at the funeral home on Thursday, September 21, 2017. Interment will follow in Brig. Gen. William C.
