Obituary of Louis R. Conte
Louis R. Conte, 79, of Monroe, formerly of Freehold Township, passed away on Monday, December 18, 2017 at Pine Acres Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Madison. He was born and raised in Staten Island, moved to Freehold Township where he raised his family, and then settled in Monroe in 2006. An active alumnus of Port Richmond High School, he was a graduate of the Class of 1956 and a member of their baseball team. After school, he tried out as a second baseman for the Brooklyn Dodgers and later played for the Woodpeckers Freehold Township softball team. Lou proudly served in the U.S. Army Reserves. He retired in 1994 as a distribution manager for Procter and Gamble, Dayton, having started his career for them at the Port Ivory location. An enthusiastic Yankees, Rangers and Giants fan, Lou was also a Notre Dame football fan, and made the pilgrimage this year with his sons and grandson. For over 25 years, he traveled to Sunny Hill Resort and Golf Course in Greenville, NY for the Conte Labor Day family reunion.
Lou volunteered on Thursdays at the soup kitchen at St. Peter’s Church in Freehold, made the best pizza, and looked forward to preparing the seven fishes on Christmas Eve. A staunch supporter of the Freehold Township P.B.A., he could be found every year at the annual Clam Bake with his whole family. He was an avid golfer, had a passion for traveling and was a strategic shopper. Pop-Pop Lou treasured his grandchildren and enjoyed nothing more than spending time with them.
Lou is survived by his wife of forty years, Margaret “Bunny” Conte; his daughter, Christine Conte of Jackson; sons, Louis V. Conte of Lake Hopatcong and Gary Conte and his wife, Terri of Rockaway; grandson, Louis T. Conte; granddaughter, Emma M. Conte; siblings Nancy Burns of Jackson; Thomas Conte and his wife, Theresa of Staten Island, and Jean Burrell of Gilbertsville, PA; and numerous nieces and nephews.
