Obituary of George McLaughlin, Sr.

George McLaughlin, Sr., 85, of Whiting, New Jersey passed away on Saturday, April 11, 2020 at Brandywine Nursing Home. He was born in Anniston, Alabama, raised in Newport, Rhode Island, and lived in Morristown. George lived in Colts Neck for many years where he and his wife Edith raised their three sons. They went on to settle in Whiting in the year 2000. He worked as an electrical engineer for Bell Labs for over 35 years before retiring in 1998. George received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Rhode Island and his master’s degree from NY University. He bravely served for the United States Navy Reserve from 1952 to 1959. He was a long-term member of the Lincroft Bible Church before he moved to Whiting where he then became a member of the Whiting Bible Church. George was a devoted Deacon at both Churches. He was so devoted to his faith that he also taught Sunday School. George was passionate about music and could play all kinds of instruments, playing Ukulele most recently at the nursing home. His other favorite past times were gardening, fishing, and spending quality time tutoring his grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his parents, Maynard and Emily McLaughlin; and his brother, Maynard (Slim) McLaughlin. George is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Edith McLaughlin; sons, George McLaughlin, Jr. and his wife, Jerreth of Tahlequah, Oklahoma, Tim McLaughlin and his wife, Judy of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Peter McLaughlin and his wife, Susan of Howell, New Jersey; six grandchildren, Benjamin, Jason, Emily, Todd, Kelita, and Luke; and one great grandchild, Rowyn.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions no immediate service will be held. A memorial gathering to honor George’s name will be held at a later date.
