Obituary of Elsie Marie Cunningham

Elsie Marie Cunningham of Freehold, NJ, passed away on Saturday, January 16, 2021, at the age of 90.  Elsie was born on October 23, 1930, in Elizabeth, NJ. She was a resident of Freehold for over 50 years. Elsie was a devoted Catholic, belonging to St. Rose of Lima Church, where she formerly taught CCD. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America and was associated with the American Legion Auxiliary in Freehold. She retired from her role as supervisor for Monmouth County Family Support Services, where she served for over 20 years. 

Elsie would illuminate any room with her charming smile and witty humor. She beamed of goodness and undoubtedly impacted the lives of each person she came across. She was very much family orientated and enjoyed family dinners and gatherings. She was abundantly proud of her family. Her relationships with her grandchildren were extremely important to her. She traveled extensively with her family and enjoyed these times.

Elsie was predeceased by her husband, Robert F. Cunningham in 1998 and her beloved grandson, Christopher J. Cunningham in 2015. She is survived by her brother, Richard Giordano; children, James Cunningham and his wife, Regina, Linda Wells and her husband, Barry, and Diane Lockhart; grandchildren, Catherine Cunningham-Starr and her husband, Jeffery, Sarah Lockhart, Emma Wells, and Kyle Roberts; great-grandchild, Christopher Cunningham-Starr.

A visitation will be held at the Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home, 100 Elton-Adelphia Road (Route 524), Freehold Township on Tuesday, January 26, 2021 from 9:00 to 10:00 AM.  Her Funeral Mass will follow at 10:30 AM at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, 16 McLean Street, Freehold.  Interment will be held in St. Rose of Lima Cemetery, Freehold.
