Obituary of Lucy Catharine "Kay" Hall
Lucy Catharine “Kay” Hall, 94, passed away on March 30, 2021at The Manor in Freehold, NJ. She was born in Hopkinsville, Kentucky on January 19, 1927 to Robert and Lucy Catharine Henry. Raised in Freehold, she graduated from Freehold High School in 1944. She moved to Howell Township, NJ after her marriage to Charles Hall. Besides being a busy wife and mother, Catharine worked as a teacher in a Preschool Center in Farmingdale while also taking some college courses. Her work history continued as an Elementary School bus driver, an assistant Librarian in the Howell School System, and finally the Media Specialist at Ardena Elementary School. Her education continued each year until she received her Master’s. After Charles and Catharine were retired, they became "snowbirds", living in Briny Breezes, Florida each winter.
Catharine and Charles had a loving marriage and enjoyed doing many things together, and with the family, while still fulfilling their own personal goals. They were active in Boy Scouts, Square Dancing Club, and camping with the Square Dancers and with their children. The longest family camping trip was going to California and back, experiencing new interests and history. Each family member had a specific job to do each night setting up the tent and taking it down in the morning. They were much involved in local history and the Howell Museums of MacKenzie House and Old School House where they enjoyed wearing period costumes while introducing the community and Elementary school children to a past world. Catharine was also the Historian at the MacKenzie Museum Library. They were firm believers in volunteer work and giving of their knowledge to others.
Catharine was the family genealogist and taught classes while in Briny Breezes. She enjoyed taking painting classes, volunteering at the Briny Library, and attending the History club. Catharine was a professional Storyteller with Garden State Storytellers League and used this talent while giving talks at The MacKenzie Museum, telling stories at Briny Breezes, and each year for the County Fair in Freehold. She was a life -long member of The First Baptist Church in Freehold, volunteering in the church library. Catharine wrote many stories, some being published, for her class requirements and for self-enjoyment.
Catharine was predeceased by her husband Charles Hall and two grandchildren, Devin and James. She is survived by her sister, Elizabeth VanMater in Naples, Florida; sons, Robert Hall and wife Jo in Arden, North Carolina, Richard Hall and wife Lis in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Art Hall and wife Rain in Owings Mills in Maryland; and daughter Madolin Hall in Howell New Jersey. She has nine surviving grandchildren Annette wit h husband Mark, Sandy with husband Carl, Matt with wife Laura, Mike with wife Kathryn, Garnette with husband David, Alyssa w it h husband Brad, Don with wife Stef, Steven, and Chris with Nicole.
Catharine also has 16 great grandchildren.
Visitation will be held at the Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home, 100 Elton-Adelphia Road (Route 524), Freehold Township on Saturday, April 10, 2021 from 9:00 to 11:00 AM with her Funeral Service to follow. Interment will take place in Adelphia Cemetery, 252 Wyckoff Mills Road, Adelphia.
