Obituary of Anthony Putz

Anthony Putz, age 90, of Freehold passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 9, 2021 surrounded by the love of his family. Born and raised in Paterson, Tony served in the United States Air Force Reserves as a trumpet player during the Korean War. In 1953, Tony met the love of his life, Bonnie Berge while stationed in Minnesota. They married in 1954 and raised their family in Elmwood Park, N.J. where he and Bonnie were active parishioners at St. Leo’s R.C. Church. Tony was a union plumber for the UA Pipefitters Local Union 274, Parsippany retiring in 1992. In retirement, Tony & Bonnie moved to Las Vegas for 12 years before returning to New Jersey to be closer to their children and grandchildren. Tony enjoyed the games of Keno, Bingo and golf but his true passion was music.   As a member of Local 16- 248, The American Federation of Musicians, he played trumpet with the Andy Materna band and would also volunteer his talent at St. Leo’s holiday events each year. Tony was an avid sports fan following the New York Giants and the New York Mets. He will be remembered for his devotion to his wife of 59 years, a devoted family man who took great pride is watching his family succeed and grow. He wanted nothing more than to be with his children and grandchildren. They brought him true joy. There are many memories that will forever be blessings to his family. One of our most recent memories that brought everyone tremendous joy was his 90th birthday party which was celebrated in October, 2020. We will be forever grateful to all who attended this celebration with us. The sheer joy of reaching this milestone and hearing him play his new trumpet for the first time in many years will forever be etched in our memories of a man who led by example. His legacy is his children and grandchildren and his future grandson-in-law. Nothing brought him more joy than watching his family grow.

Tony was predeceased by his wife, Bonnie K. Putz and a sister, Mary Goldstein. He is survived by his children, Linda Attanasio and her husband, Michael of Freehold, Laura D’Urso and her husband, Anthony of Point Pleasant Beach and Anthony Putz and his wife, Beth of Hawthorne; six grandchildren, Christina D’Urso, Alyssa D’Urso and her fiancé, Brandon Baysura, Loriana Attanasio, Erica Attanasio, Amanda Putz, and Ryan Putz.
