Obituary of George J. Wood

George Wood, 101, of Freehold Township passed away at home on June 7, 2021. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Manhattan College before enlisting in the armed forces to serve as a Radar Operator in World War II. After George returned from the war, he attended New York University to complete his masters. He loved his country and knew nearly everything about military aircraft. George was a devout Catholic who attended daily mass and was a Knight of Columbus. In his free time, he loved to care for his yard and always took pride in his well-kept home and family. George and his wife were always together in everything they did and loved taking rides in his car. He loved baseball and cheering for his New York Yankees.  George leaves behind the legacy of a centurion as well as the knowledge and wisdom passed down to his family and friends over his long life.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Dorothy A. Wood in 2017; his son, Robert Wood in 2015, and son, George Wood, III in 2007. He is survived by his son, Kevin Wood of Spain, and his daughter, Maryellen Scott of Freehold. He also leaves behind five grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

A visitation will be held at the Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home, 100 Elton-Adelphia Road (Route 524), Freehold Township on Monday, June 14, 2021 from 2:00 to 4:00 PM and 7:00 to 9:00 PM. Relatives and friends are invited to gather at 9:30 AM on Tuesday, June 15, 2021 at the funeral home for the procession to his 10:30 AM Funeral Mass at the Co-Cathedral of St. Robert Bellarmine, 61 Georgia Road, Freehold Township. Interment will follow in the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Cemetery, 299 Freehold-Englishtown Road, Freehold Township.
