Obituary of Ann Vander Vliet
Ann Vander Vliet, 87, of Freehold passed away on Wednesday, November 17, 2021 at Sunrise of Jackson. She was born and raised in Jersey City and had lived in Bloomingdale and Rockaway Township. Ann worked as a bookkeeper for Crest Oil Company in Butler. With her husband, James, she loved staying aboard her boat in the Mantoloking River at the Winter Marina just to get away. Ann retired to Boca Raton, Florida in the early 1980’s and lived there completely independently until returning to New Jersey to live with her son in 2018. In retirement, she took up the game of golf, did aerobics, took yoga classes and cherished her time in the sun reading a good book. Ann was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who will be dearly missed.
Ann was predeceased by her husband, James Vander Vliet in 1979. She is survived by her three sons, Bernie Smokowski of Newport Beach, CA, Joseph Smokowski and his wife, Marianne of Freehold Township, NJ, Rob Smokowski and his wife, Kim of Brick, NJ; eight grandchildren, Christopher Smokowski, Kathleen Smokowski, Krista Smokowski and her wife, Megan, Steven Smokowski and his wife, Jessica, Matthew Smokowski and his wife, Kiersten, Kevin Smokowski, Lyndsay O’Hara and her husband, Mike, and Meghan Sliva and her husband, Colt; and eight great grandchildren.
All arrangements are private under the direction of the Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home, Freehold Township. Inurnment was held in East Ridgelawn Cemetery, Clifton, NJ.
