Obituary of Mary Jaakobs
Mary Jaakobs, 100, of Freehold Township passed away peacefully at home with her daughter at her side on Wednesday, April 27, 2022. She was blessed to celebrate her 100th birthday recently with her immediate family and enjoy ice cream cake and a cupcake as well! Mary was born in Hoboken, the same birthplace as her favorite singer Frank Sinatra. She was raised in Brooklyn and settled in Freehold in 1969 to raise her family.
Mary worked as an administrative assistant for the US Government on Governors Island where she met the love of her life, Ralph. They both shared a love of reading, and their first date was at the New York Public Library. They enjoyed a long courtship and finally tied the knot in 1961 and were blessed with two children. Mary was a devoted daughter and loving wife, wonderful and proud mother, and grandmother. She will be deeply missed, especially by her daughter, her best friend, Marietta. Words that come to mind when thinking of her would be strong, proud, dignified, brave, quiet, kind, honest, loyal, hard-working, caring, loving, spiritual, and even witty. :)
Over the years, Mary was a member of the St. George Greek Orthodox Church, the Freehold Senior Center, the Molly Pitcher Women’s Club, and the Association of The Blind. She also volunteered at CentraState Medical Center, the Office of the Handicapped and Visually Impaired as well as her church.
She was predeceased by her loving husband, Ralph H. Jaakobs in 2016, and her sister Katherine Roros in 2017. Mary is survived by her children, Jim Jaakobs and his wife, Sandra of Hillsborough, and Marietta and her husband Ronald Sage of Wall; five grandchildren, Alyssa, Tina, Jake, Alex, and Russell; and two great grandchildren, Peter and Lottie.
Visitation will be held at the Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home, 100 Elton Adelphia Road (Route 524), Freehold Township on Friday, April 29, 2022, from 4:00 to 8:00 PM. Relatives and friends are invited to attend her 10:00 AM funeral service at St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 1033 West Park Avenue, Ocean on Saturday, April 30, 2022. Entombment will follow in Maplewood Cemetery, Freehold Township.
