Obituary of Richard Gomes
Richard Gomes, 79, of Freehold Township, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Tuesday, November 1, 2022. Richard was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. He was born and raised in Newark, NJ where he met the love of his life, Margaret “Diane” Young. Richard and Diane were married on May 3, 1964 and shared 58 blessed years together. They started their family in East Orange before settling here in Freehold in 1976. Richard worked as a line manager for General Motors for 31 years prior to his retirement in 1997. He was a very skilled craftsman and was always willing to lend a hand with any type of project. Richard enjoyed nothing more than spending time with his family and treasured his role as “Poppy”. He was known for his love of dogs, his sense of humor, and his kind nature.
Richard was predeceased by his parents, Augusto and Emilia Gomes; his in-laws, Mary and Richard Young; his brother, Augusto Gomes, Jr.; and his brother-in-law, Carlo Melia. Richard is survived by his wife, Margaret “Diane” Gomes; son, Richard P. Gomes and his wife, Marie of Howell; daughters, Donna Gomes of Freehold Township and Marianne Asaro and her husband, Vincent of Lincroft; six grandchildren, Shayna, Noah, Richie, Alexandria, Melissa, and Sean; three siblings, Al Gomes and his wife, Monica of Waretown, Connie Melia of Somerset and Addie Lowrie and her husband, Doug of Milford; a sister-in-law, Linda Gomes of Florida; and many nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held at the Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home, 100 Elton-Adelphia Road (Route 524), Freehold Township on Sunday, November 6, 2022, from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his 11:00 AM Funeral Service at the funeral home on Monday, November 7, 2022. Entombment will follow in Marlboro Memorial Cemetery, 361 Highway 79, Morganville.
