Obituary of Richard Torbinski
Richard Torbinski, 89, of Freehold passed away on Sunday, February 19, 2023 at Applewood Retirement Community, Freehold. He was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, then married his wife of 65 years, Mary Prendergast. Richard and Mary lived in Old Bridge for 27 years, then moved to Matawan for 33 years. Richard is a veteran of the Korean War and served honorably in the United States Army. He graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School and attained his New Jersey Professional Engineering License, which led to his successful career as a Principal Engineer for the ABB Lummus Company in Bloomfield, New Jersey. During his career he was an international traveler, spending substantial time in Taiwan, Iran, and Brazil, among other countries. Wherever he went, he always enjoyed and participated in local activities and traditions. Retiring in 1998, Richard spent his winters in Key Biscayne, Florida. He enjoyed golfing, playing poker, watching sports and the Jersey Shore. He was an expert crossword and Sudoku solver.
Above all, he was devoted to his family.
He was predeceased by his siblings, Walter, Jean, and Frances. Richard is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Torbinski of Freehold; children, Christina MacRae and her husband, Thomas of Newtown, PA, Richard Torbinski of Far Hills, NJ, David Torbinski of Manalapan, NJ, and Thomas Torbinski and his wife, Kimberly of Leesburg, VA; grandchildren, Cayley, Thomas, and Abigail; and many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Visitation will be held at the Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home, 100 Elton-Adelphia Road (Route 524), Freehold Township on Friday, February 24, 2023 from 9:00 to 10:00 AM. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his 10:30 AM Funeral Mass on Friday, February 24, 2023 at the Co-Cathedral of St. Robert Bellarmine, 61 Georgia Road, Freehold Township.
