Obituary of Edna I. Gately

Edna I. Gately, 97, of Howell passed away at home on Tuesday, August 22, 2023.  She was born, raised and had lived in Jersey City, and lived in Carteret prior to settling here in 1995.  Edna worked as an information operator at Bell Atlantic in the Jersey City and Woodbridge offices prior to retiring in 1991 after 30 years of dedicated service.  She was a member of the Howell Senior Center and enjoyed her puzzle books.  Edna had a sweet tooth and always had a desire for a good piece of cake. Most of all, she relished in the time she spent with her granddaughters and great-grandchildren.  Granny Edna was a beloved mother and nana and will be missed by all who loved her. 

Edna was predeceased by her husband, James F. Gately in 1961; four brothers, Robert, Edward, Jackie and Joseph; and two sisters, Catherine and Rosemary.  She is survived by her daughter, Rosemary Antonaccio and her husband, Robert of Howell; two grandchildren, Kristin Nitti and her husband, Len of Monroe and Kaitlin Zdziarski and her husband, Matthew of Bordentown; four great grandchildren, Anthony, Braeden, Lucas and Landon; and her sister-in-law, Marie “Connie” Haley of Toms River.

Visitation will be held at the Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home, 100 Elton-Adelphia Road (Route 524), Freehold Township on Friday, August 25, 2023 from 3:00 to 7:00 PM.  Relatives and friends are invited to gather at 9:00 AM on Saturday, August 26, 2023 for the procession to her 10:00 AM Funeral Mass at the Church of St. Veronica, 4215 Route 9 North, Howell.  Interment will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery & Mausoleum, North Arlington.  For those desire, memorial contributions in Edna’s name may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.  All arrangements were under the direction of the Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home, Freehold Township.  For information, directions or to leave condolence messages, visit www.claytonfuneralhome.com
