Obituary of Marvin Michael Jones
Dr. Marvin Michael Jones, 64, of Millstone passed away suddenly at Monmouth Medical Center, Freehold Township. Dr. Jones is from Philadelphia, PA where he matriculated at Melrose Academy as the first African American student. He later went on to graduate first in his class. Dr. Jones was then enrolled at LaSalle College Prepatory School where he lettered in basketball and graduated 10th in his class of 230 boys. He was an SAT merit semi-finalist and named to the National Honor Society. Finishing prep school, he received and accepted the competitive Scholarship of Howard University. Dr. Jones entered the six year B.S. degree in zoology in 1982 and with a medical doctorate degree in 1984 with honors. Dr. Jones did his residency at Howard University Hospital and was elected chief resident by his professors and fellow residents.
Upon completion of his residency Dr. Jones moved to Freehold in July of 1988. Here he joined the Emergency Department of CentraState Medical Center. Dr. Jones became board certified in emergency medicine after having passed both oral and written exams in the 97th percentile. He was on the Medical Executive Committee, Credentials Critical Care Committee, and Pharmacy and Therapeutics. Dr. Jones gave numerous lectures in his field of Emergency Medicine and Bioterrorism to doctors, nurses and laypersons alike. He was the Chairman of the Department of Emergency Medicine at CentraState. Dr. Jones also served as the Medical Director for the Englishtown Manalapan First Aid Squad and the Board of Directors of the YMCA where he also acted as Chairman. Additionally, he was on the Medical Advisory Board of Monmouth/Ocean County Paramedics (MONOC), and served as President of Central Jersey Emergency Medicine Associates. In addition, Dr. Jones served on the Board of Trustees of the Ranney School in Tinton Falls and the CentraState Healthcare Foundation Board where he served as Vice Chairman.
In recent years, he brought his experience to care for the urgent medical needs of the community when he opened Physicians Urgent Care in Manalapan. It was here that Dr. Jones was a trusted source for many people especially serving on the front line during the pandemic. Dr. Jones had an impact on so many grateful patients and will be remembered as a gentle giant with a smile that could light up a room. On a personal level he had the biggest heart and a booming laugh. He absolutely loved life and he loved his family more than anything.
Dr. Jones was predeceased by his father Marvin A. Jones in 1972; his mother, Doris S. Jones in 2020; and his aunt, Ruby Cooper in 2020. He is survived by his loving wife of 22 years, Tara Jones; daughter, Siobhan; son, Gavin; in-laws, Geraldine Shepherd, Shannon Khulusi and her husband, Dr. Nami Khulusi, Glenn Garrison and his wife, Alexandra; cousins, Patricia Hobbs and her husband, Johnny, Ruby Scott Mondesir and Robin Messiah, Uncle, Benjamin Scott ;and many cousins, nieces and nephews. and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held at the Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home, 100 Elton-Adelphia Road (Route 524), Freehold Township on Monday, September 30, 2024 from 2:00 to 6:00 PM. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his 11:00 AM Funeral Mass on Tuesday, October 1, 2024 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 91 Stillhouse Road, Millstone. Interment will be private.
