Obituary of Carmen M. Alvarado
Carmen M. Alvarado, 89, of Freehold passed away at home on Friday, September 20, 2024 with her daughter by her side. She was born and raised in Puerto Rico, came to the United States in the 50's, and had lived in Jersey City before settling in Monmouth County in 1995. Carmen worked as an administrative assistant for the Superintendent of Schools in Jersey City and then returned to Puerto Rico and worked as an administrative assistant for the Mayor in Coamo, Puerto Rico. After moving back to Jersey City, Carmen owned and operated Carmen's Grocery Store with her husband until they retired. She enjoyed playing bingo, shopping, and completing hidden search puzzles.
She was predeceased by her husband, Sergio Alvarado in 1998. Carmen is survived by her daughter, Arleen Rios and her husband, George; grandchildren, Jacqueline and her husband, Andrew and Rebecka and her husband, Brennen; son, Sergio R. Alvarado and his wife, Dorothy; and brothers, Anthony Mercado, Victor Mercado, Guillermo Mercado, and Hector Mercado.
Visitation will be held at the Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home, 100 Elton-Adelphia Road (Route 524), Freehold Township on Thursday, September 26, 2024 from 5:00 to 8:00 PM. Relatives and friends are invited to gather at the funeral home on Friday, September 27, 2024 at 9:30 AM for the procession to her 10:30 AM Funeral Mass at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, 16 McLean Street, Freehold. Interment will follow in Brigadier General William C. Doyle New Jersey Veteran Cemetery, 350 Province Line Road, Arneytown.
