Obituary of Joan P. Silbiger

Joan P. Silbiger, 85, of Freehold Township passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 2, 2024, at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township.  Joan was born in Greensboro, NC, and raised there and in Matthews, VA.  She settled in the Applewood community, Freehold Township, in 2010, and lived previously in Tinton Falls and Long Branch.  Joan received her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Douglas College - Rutgers University. She was retired from working as a social worker for the Social Security Administration.   She was a long-standing member of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Monmouth County, Lincroft.

Joan traveled the world and relished new experiences. She had a great love of the arts, music and literature. She enjoyed classic and contemporary movies. One of her joys was entertaining family and friends and being with people. She was a loving Mother, a true and loyal friend. She was a many faceted, complex, compassionate woman who will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Joan was predeceased by her husband, Herman Silbiger.  She is survived by her children, Marcus Lesseur and his wife Beverly, and Gabrielle Denson and her husband Milton; two step-children, Russel Silbiger and Julie Kaye; and six grandchildren, Shawna, Katie, Danielle, David, Aly and Evan.

One of Joan’s greatest joys was being near the ocean, listening to the waves upon the sand and the sea breeze blowing in her face. Her ashes, as well as Herman’s, will be released to the welcoming embrace of the sea by their family at a later time.
