Obituary of Bernard Ward

BERNARD A. WARD, 92, of FREEHOLD, died Wednesday, Feb. 13, at Care One at Wall, Wall. Mr. Ward was born in Jersey City and had lived most of his life in Fanwood before moving to Freehold in 1990. He was a good man with a kind heart, a twinkle in his eye and a dry Irish wit. He was a longshoreman for Maersk Shipping at their Jersey City and Newark docks from 1938 until his retirement in 1990. He was a communicant at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, Farmingdale. Mr. Ward was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during World War II, where he witnessed the attack on Pearl Harbor. He was assigned to the 251st Coast Artillery medical detachment. Mr. Ward was a member of the International Longshoremen's Association and was a life-long Yankees fan. He was predeceased by his wife, Hilde, in 2004. Surviving are four daughters, Linda Krikorian and her husband Harry of Vista, Calif., Nancy Werner and her husband George of Farmingdale, Veronica Ward and her domestic partner, Diane Jaquier of San Ramon, Calif., and Brie Ward of Weaverville, N.C. He adored his five grandchildren and will be sorely missed. Visiting hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home, 100 Elton-Adelphia Road (Route 524), Freehold Township. Family and friends may gather at 8:30 a.m. Friday for the Rite of Committal, followed by his 9:30 a.m. Funeral Mass at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Chapel, North Main Street, Farmingdale.
