Condolences
Dave, is thought of with warm regards and our condolences go out to his family.
Kathy and Molly, I was sitting at home reflecting on the season and thought of David and you two. Recently, the AT&T Pioneers built a ramp at a home nearby in Middletown and of course, the project became a tribute to David. HIs legacy lives on in each of us who carry on his work, and through us, his spirit continues to be present. I pray that you are learning to live each day the way David would have wanted you to - full of the spirit and vigor that he embraced and embodied. Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time...
It is with great sadness that I learned of David's passing. Dave was on our Vipers softball team back at Bell Labs and was always a fun guy. I also remember seeing him at Alaire State park demonstrating his blacksmith skills. My condolences to the famliy.
On behalf of the Northeast Blacksmiths Association, I would like to offer our condolences. I knew Dave from a number of meets I attended at Marshal's farm. Dave was always involved and busy helping out. He will be missed.
To David's Family, Please know you are in my thoughts and prayers at this most difficult time. I happened to have the pleasure of skiing with David for many years. He was one of the very few people I knew that could make telemarking look easy. I grew to love his dry sense of humor and his seemingly quirky ways. He was a true gentleman; a rose among the thorns and will be missed tremendously.
We have known David, Kathy and Molly for several years. We met them as Molly attended Awana at IBC. What a nice man, lovely wife and adorable Molly. We are praying for all of you and may the God of all comfort and wrap His tender loving arms around you. Will never forget when I saw him fixing the door knobs at the church:} Love Alan, Joy and Family
I am really sorry for your loss. I worked with David from time to time and always looked forward to him visiting us in Northern Virgina. David remined me why its important to keep all your accounts current because you never know when it might all end. May the creator or heavens and earth give you strenght and guide you through this difficult time.
The Hallberg's Leigh,Ginny,Chris & Suzanne were in Charlotte,NC on Dec 21,2013 for the Memorial Service of Bob's brother Jack Macauley along with
Bob and his two son's David and Craig. It had been many years since we had seen each other and had a wonderful visit reminiscing about old times with our families. We were very impressed with David and what a great guy he was and how helpful and caring he was to my sister Linda and my nieces Bonnie and Christina in their time of need. We offer our heartfelt condolences to the Macauley family.
It was a pleasure to work with David on Pioneer projects at Collier Youth Services. He was so generous with his time and talent and always did what he could for the children and he did so much! I am glad to have known him. He will be missed by so many. With deepest sympathy, Jackie St. Angel
I am so sorry for your loss. All the children at Kateri Day Camp and Project ECO will so miss our beloved Blacksmith David. His annual visit was one of the highlights of the summer. David was such a wonderful and generous soul. Thank you for sharing him with us.
I am so sorry for your loss and pray that God will give you both strength and comfort during this difficult time. David was an important part of our AT&T family and we will miss him greatly.
My deepest sympathies to Dave's family. I ran a ski trip or two with Dave while a member of the Holmdel Ski Club. He was either involved in running the trips, or being on the committee to help determine the trips for the coming year. He was an asset and will be truly missed.
What a shock to learn of Dave's passing. My condolences to Dave's family, his brother Craig and his family and his Dad and sister. I have known Dave since Bloomfield HS and though we did a poor job of staying in touch kept track of him over the years. He truly was a fantastic human being who cared greatly for others and gave of himself immensely. Dave and Craig's love of the Boy Scouts led me to urge my own son to join the scouts and earn the rank of Eagle Scout. Our prayers are with the family in their time of need.
What a shock. Dave was so full of life and love. He gave so much to the NJBA. I am grateful for having known him and all I learned from him. Nate Pettengill
I have known David since the mid-1990's, almost exclusively in his avocation as a blacksmith. I met him while we were historic reenactors and volunteer blacksmiths at Historic Allaire Village. When some of us blacksmiths decided we needed an ABANA chapter in New Jersey, David became a founding member and director of the New Jersey Blacksmith Association ("NJBA"). He soon assumed a leading role in the group, and remained one of the most active members in the group almost to the day of his death. His participation was so all-encompassing the NJBA board is now scrambling to pick up the loose ends resulting from his untimely death.
David and I started out as novice blacksmiths at Historic Allaire Village, and over the years we each improved our skills, attaining some degree of competence in the art, and sometimes attending the same classes in blacksmithing at the Peters Valley Craft Center, in Layton, NJ. I sometimes teased him with an anecdote from our past: Many years ago, we were attending a blacksmithing class at Peters Valley when a reporter / photographer showed up to do a story. David cooperated fully and was posed for many minutes in many positions at work at the anvil. Then the story appeared -- with my picture in it instead of his. It seems the photographer hit the shutter at the perfect moment -- my hammer coming down on hot steel on the anvil, with the forge fire in the background. Naturally, David was miffed and I had a good chuckle.
But, over the years, I watched as David improved his skills beyond mine, simply by spending more time at the anvil than I ever did. He developed a certain repertoire that he was good at and comfortable with, and he frequently made these pieces when doing blacksmithing demonstrations before the public: A leaf keychain attachment, a simple, elegant candle holder, a courting candle holder, and a few others. He probably made dozens of these pieces over the years, and I imagine that some of them grace homes around the state.
David ran many of the state-wide NJBA blacksmithing demonstrations, sometimes single-handedly, and literally thousands of people have seen him demonstrating. David championed NJBA demonstrations at Cold Spring Village in Cape May, sometimes vacationing with his family in the area. He was the coordinator and chief proponent of the NJBA demonstrations at the Middlesex County Fair. The list goes on: Historic Speedwell Village, Peters Valley Craft Center, Wharton Canal Day, Walnford Day, Waterloo Village, Princeton University PUMRS "Man of Steel" day, and others.
David also coordinated his interests in blacksmithing and the Boy Scouts by inviting Scouts to participate in NJBA demonstrations at various events, especially the Middlesex County Fair. I lost count how many boys, over the years he coached at the forge and anvil. He took this interest to the national Boy Scout Jamboree, at least two times. He didn't limit this enthusiasm to young kids, but jumped at the chance to demonstrate at Princeton University (to name one), where, in all-day workshops, students got to try their hand at the anvil. (photos: www.princeton.edu/prism/news/archive/?id=8347 and www.princeton.edu/prism/blacksmith2013/photos/) David also frequently attended the open forge meetings, run by another member, at which NJBA members can work at the forge and anvil and get coaching from more experienced smiths.
In fact, the ONLY activity I know that David preferred to blacksmithing was skiing. I often quipped that he was ne're to be seen during skiing season. But the share of the load that David shouldered more than made up for his occasional absence at an NJBA board meeting.
I knew David before he met his wife, Kathy, and have watched their daughter, Molly, grow up. Kathy and Molly have frequently attended many NJBA events such at the Middlesex County Fair, Walnford Day, and workshops we held in Howell, NJ. Kathy, who is herself a skilled potter, often contributed food such as soup or cookies. They always attended the annual NJBA Holiday Party. I can attest that David was a devoted husband and father. He stayed by Kathy's side for hours on end when she had a stay in hospital. He bragged about Molly every chance he got, but it was always clear he had good reason for bragging.
David will be missed by me, by the NJBA, by the several historic sites and other institutions that he worked so closely with, and by the many people whom he assisted in their interest with blacksmithing.
We are shocked to hear of David's death. He was a good man and a wonderful friend, always cheerful and upbeat. We so enjoyed the ski trips he organized and ran so well. It is hard to believe that we will not see him again. Our condolences to his family.

I am so sorry for your loss. I have worked very closely with David these past few years, and have known him as a very gruff, but friendly co-worker and friend. He liked his work, and loved his family. May his spirit shine down and watch over you always.
I was shocked to hear the news. I have know David through the New Jersey Blacksmiths Association since its beginnings. David always took on more than his share and handled it well. He loved blacksmithing and sharing his love of it with the public and teaching those who wanted to learn. He was our chairman, treasurer and event coordinator for many years and a great friend to us who worked closely with him. His passing leaves an empty space in many peoples lives. Kathy and Molly, I cannot say how important you were to him and I know you are the only ones who can miss him more than the rest of us
Kathy & Molly, I am so sorry for your loss, David was a great guy! He will be missed. Praying for you to get through this most difficult time.
To Kathy and Molly and all of Dave's family, I am so sorry for your loss - I will surely miss Dave's companionship as part of our lunch table circle of friends. I have known Dave since I started at AT&T over 25 years ago and he was one of the first to take me under his wing in a social sense, including me in the outings back in the day. Thinking back, Dave was the one who brought me to the Holmdel Chorus, which was a stepping stone for other singing pursuits that you know I value greatly in my life today, so he was truly inspiring in that sense. I will miss him, his "Klingon sense of humor", and the little chuckles we would get out of him with all of our silliness. Always fond memories...
To David's family, I am very sorry for your loss. I worked with David for several years at AT&T. He was a true friend and trusted colleague. His friendship and leadership will be greatly missed. May your fond memories of David help you through this very difficult time.
My sincere condolences to you and your family. David was my first roommate when I joined the government division of AT&T in Holmdel in the early 90's. He was a great mentor in those days, and I enjoyed working with him on and off over the years until I retired last month. He was a renaissance man in that he was comfortable in the blacksmithing art of years ago and the information technology art of today. He will be missed by all those that worked with him at AT&T.
Kathy and Molly, your husband and dad will truly be missed by me and his colleagues at AT&T. I met David over 25 years ago and have fond memories of working with him and playing with him on our center's softball team. He was a man of integrity and was not afraid to speak his mind. His life of service outside of work is to be admired. Many were touched by his life, and we will miss him dearly.
Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you right now. I am so glad I was able to see David two weeks ago at Jack Macauley's funeral service. I had the privilege of being David's next door neighbor and babysitter from the time he was 2 years old. He was always very special and I know he will be greatly missed. Heaven has another angel!
A true diamond in the rough. Beneath that sometimes gruff exterior was one of the most generous souls I have ever met. Kathy and Molly, I’m sure you know that he loved you very much and was always so proud of you. David, we will miss your sense of humor, practicality, dedication, and yes, even your stubbornness :-) It’s hard to find words to express how much you will be missed.
Please accept my deepest condolences for David's passing. Over the past 13 years at AT&T I worked with David infrequently but when I did I found him to be a very energetic, dedicated, and caring individual. He will be missed. We will keep him and his family in our thoughts and prayers.
Kathleen and Molly, I am so sorry for your loss. David interviewed me when I came to AT&T and was initially assigned as my mentor. I was involved with him in several Pioneers projects. I fondly remember how Molly wanted to hang with me when we did the ramp project at the Blind Association in Leonardo. David will be sorely missed! May God bless him and you, and my prayer is that the Holy Spirit watch over and take care of you both.

I really enjoyed working with David. We worked together every couple of months on the ADS-B project with Exelis. He always made me think and ensured that I was thorough. I really respected him and was shocked and saddened to learn of his passing. I know I'm a stranger to you -- his family -- but I just wanted to make an effort to help.
