Obituary of Genevieve A. West

Genevieve A. West, 89, of Mechanicsburg, PA passed away at home on July 31, 2019. She was born in Jersey City on July 13, 1930 to her loving parents Dr. Keith Madison and Dr. Lena Edwards. Gen was born and raised in Jersey City and had lived in Lakewood, later moving to Jackson where she lived for 47 years before settling in Mechanicsburg in 2017. She received her bachelor’s degree from the College of New Rochelle in New York, and earned her M.S.W. from Boston College. Gen’s career in social work spanned 40 years, the last 30 serving the students and families of Lakewood working for the Board of Education, retiring in 1997. Her passion for social work was focused both as a social worker and as a member of Soroptimist International, advocating for gender equality and women’s empowerment. Gen served on the board of Visiting HomeCare Services of Ocean County which benefited tremendously from her service. Through her faith she accomplished these goals as an active parishioner of Saint Mary of the Lake Catholic Church in Lakewood.  Gen enjoyed traveling, playing cards and bingo but most of all she loved spending time with family and friends.

She is predeceased by her husband, Dr. Alan West; and her brother, Fr. Martin Madison, S.A. Gen is survived by her son, Dr. Joseph E. West and his wife, Sue of Mechanicsburg, PA; her granddaughter, Jennifer Parsons and her husband, James of Camp Hill, PA; her sister, Dr. Marie Metoyer of Manchester, NH; her brothers, Dr. Edward Madison of Howell and John Madison, PhD and his wife, Avril of Wilmington, DE; and Paul Madison of Grand Rapids, MI; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held at the Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home, 100 Elton-Adelphia Road (Route 524), Freehold Township on Friday, August 9, 2019 from 5:00 to 8:00 PM. Relatives and friends are invited to gather at the funeral home on Saturday, August 10, 2019 at 9:30 AM for the procession to her 10:30 AM Funeral Mass at Saint Mary of the Lake Church, 43 Madison Avenue, Lakewood. Interment will follow in Holy Name Cemetery, 823 West Side Avenue, Jersey City.
