Obituary of George Matthews
George A. Matthews, 77, of Howell passed away surrounded by his family on Sunday, November 11, 2012 at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township. George was a lifelong Howell resident. He was the director of the Public Works Department in Howell Township for 39 years retiring in 1996. George was a life member of the Adelphia Fire Department for the past 55 years and serviced as Chief in 1969. He was a member of the Ironside Gun Club, Lacey.
George was predeceased by a son, George F. Matthews in 1996; a brother; and two sisters. He is survived by his wife, Janet Matthews; a son, Gregg L. Matthews of Howell; a daughter, Donna Matthews of Media, PA; two stepdaughters, JoAnn Murphy of Farmingdale and Linda Haase of Howell; two stepsons, Mybon Layton of Matawan and Robert Layton of Morgantown, WV; seven grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Visiting at the Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home, 100 Elton-Adelphia Road (Route 524), Freehold Township on Wednesday, November 14, 2012 from 2:00 to 4:00 & 7:00 to 9:00 PM. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his 11:00 AM funeral service at the funeral home on Thursday, November 15, 2012 with Rev. William Frederickson, officiating. Interment to follow in Adelphia Cemetery, Adelphia.
