Obituary of Roger Patrick Cooney III
Roger Patrick Cooney III, 59, of Freehold Township, passed away at home on Sunday, December 19, 2021, after battling with Glioblastoma for over two years. Born in Brooklyn, his family moved to Jackson when he was one, and lived there until moving to Freehold Township in 2019. Roger attended Jackson Memorial High School where he was a sports enthusiast, excelling in basketball and baseball. He continued his love for sports in his adult life as an avid Rangers and Giants fan. If you knew Roger, you know he filled any spare time he had playing golf. You could find him any day of the week, hitting the links as a member of Battleground Country Club, and a former member of Woodlake, Lakewood, and Eagle Ridge clubs. Roger was the owner of Cooney’s Pub & Package in Old Bridge, and the Deerfield Inn in Parlin. His patrons fondly remember him closing the bar on Saturdays with a round of Patron Silver while singing his favorite karaoke songs. He was a lifelong member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 6201, in Jackson.
The love for his family and friends knew no end, and they knew where they could find him at any gathering, large or small- relaxing in His recliner.
Roger was predeceased by his parents, Roger P. Cooney, Jr. and Janet. He is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Cindy; son Roger IV and his wife, Alison of Farmingdale; daughter, Katie and her fiancé, Chris Sims of Hoboken; grandchildren, Cara and Roger “Patrick” V; sisters, Christine and her husband, Tom Carney of Newfield, and Tara Cooney Esposito of Freehold; and a large extended family.
