Condolences to the Grossman family. Though I had not seen or spoken to this man in decades, my heart and soul beat with the lessons this man taught me and my brothers in the 1970's in Woodcliff Lake youth football. We had the privilege to be instructed and influenced by a man coached by Lombardi. Mr. Grossman as he was known to us, was intense and fair, and had high expectations. One of the pieces of instruction I retained as it pertained to competing was 'off the field you are absolute gentlemen, on the field you are the meanest, toughest young men on the field. As a sixth grader competing with 8th graders, he was sure to not lose me to fear or discouragement. Even at nearly 60 years old today I still remember him telling me after a particular upsetting play....."Duane, you got more hair on your ass than most of these guys out here.'. That did it.... On to 6 more years of football in Woodcliff Lake and Montvale. Anyway, life lessons thru coaching are so very important. I coach still today, baseball, not football, and there are few more rewarding experiences than to see a young man 'get it'. In sport and in life. May Christ our Lord bless the family thru the loss.
