All too soon we have lost a good person, a great guy to be around. He will be sorely missed on the Trap line. We are diminished.
Best pal I will always love and remember you for the rest of my days till. We meet again. I love you Your pal Donny
Don't think of him as gone away - -
His journey's just begun
Life holds so many facets
This earth is only one.
Just think of him as resting
From the sorrows and the tears
In a place of warmth and comfort
Where there are no days or years
Think how he must be wishing
That we could know today
How nothing but our sadness
Can really pass away
And think of him as living
In the hearts of those he touched
For nothing loved is ever lost - -
And he was loved so much.
"I'm sorry, I forgot. Is Sal your brother-in-law?"
That's the question asked gently by an old friend I haven't seen in years as she expressed her condolences.
I texted back, "Yes" because it was the simplest response, and I was feeling drained at that point.
But there's so much more I should have said.
I should have said, yes - Sal was my brother-in-law - but he was also our rock and the anchor of our family.
He's the one who filled our gas tanks, fixed the brakes, made the coffee, bought the ice-cream, slipped you the hundred and refused to hear a word of thanks and never waited to be asked - he just showed up where he was needed and set about making it "all better."
With infinite patience, he helped blow out the birthday candles - and blow up the imaginary bad guys with Super Soakers and Nerf guns -all the time giggling - so delighted by our chuckles - which was his real target all along. Yeah, Sal was a joker and his sense of humor was infectious.
You could take him aside - or follow him as he gently nudged you along with a tilt of his head - for a private chat. He'd ask what you needed, give you his honest opinion or advice - and you knew he'd keep your secret - only sharing his worries for you with his best friend and soul mate.
So who's going to fill those big shoes now? Who's going to lead this family by example, showing the love and kindness that were Sal's hallmark?
You might not be ready to hear it today, Meg, Mike, and Salvatore - but I nominate you.
I nominate you because I see the light of your father in your eyes. You are each so beautifully, uniquely your own person, but you're also the best of your mom and dad. And that means you're eminently qualified to carry on his legacy.
Just as he did, you'll call your mother and Aunt Sharon every day. You'll tease Aunt Jeni 'til she blushes and squeals, "stop that!" You'll drop by the Quik Stop and drink coffee and shoot the breeze with the old guys. You'll take Caity and Jess fishing, and Andy and Greg shooting, and listen when Paul needs to talk. You'll reassure Keri and Aunt Di, and you'll make sure the water heater is working at Granny and Papa's house and that Aunt Anna has everything she needs. You'll call at the spur of the moment and invite us to the Jackson Diner for breakfast and the Shrimp Box for dinner. When Aunt Laura or the Passanisis, or your cousins roll into town, you'll break out the pillows and blankets and Bar-B-Q. You'll make the coffee and bring the donuts.
You'll teach Baby Sal to kiss everyone hello and hug them goodbye - because it's polite, but also it might be the last time you see them.
You'll show every day in every way that love, laughter and loyalty binds us all together and makes us strong -makes us family.
I know you can do it. Dad's counting on you. We're all here. We'll help you.
For the love of Sal.
Love always,
Aunt Laureen

Howell High School wrestling team matches and double dates with our soon to be wives, who would have guessed it... I can't believe he's gone ? Rest in God's Loving Graces Sal…
